The 21st Century Facilities Planning Committee

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the committee is to make a recommendation to the School Board for a Master Facilities Plan for the Mercer Island School District within a 12 to 18 month period. The master plan is to be a broad-brush plan that includes all MISD facilities on all schoolproperties, including a general timeline.

The committee has been asked to startwith a “clean slate,” however, all background information, studies and information from previous work is available as are MISD resources, staff and experts, as needed.

BACKGROUND

The Mercer Island School District is focused on its ‘2020 Vision’ of successfully preparing students for the cognitive, global and digital world. At the same time, the district is facing growing enrollment and aging schools.

Mercer Island School enrollment currently exceeds facility capacity, with over 600 district students in 2010-11 being housed in temporary (portable) classrooms. Enrollment over the last 3 years has outpaced growth projections and schoolenrollment is expected to continue to grow over the next ten years, potentially reaching the high enrollment mark set in the 1970s on Mercer Island.

Over the last few years, the district has completed building and program needs assessments, and began the public conversation about facilities utilizing a“springboard” facilities proposal. In addition, the district has committed to delivering a “master plan’ for the North Mercer/MIHS/Admin “mega-block” property as a part of the PEAK development process.

To address facility challenges facing the district, in June 2010, the Mercer Island School District School Board created the 21st Century Facilities Planning Committee (21CFPC), a citizens committee that the district will work with to create options and scenarios for housing students and programs to best meeting the long-range facility need of the district.

The 21CFPC made it's recommendation to the Mercer Island School Board on Thursday, September 29th.
