Welcome to the Fruit, Vegetable, and Grain Program!

The Mercer Island School District Food Service Department in conjunction with the Mercer Island Food Revolution and the District Wellness Committee is excited to announce a new Fruit, Vegetable, and Grain program! Beginning in November, a new fruit, vegetable and whole grain will be featured in the school lunch menu. This will be a wonderful way for parents to talk about making new and healthy choices and for the students to try something new! We will also be providing a little “background” information about each fruit, vegetable, and grain.

Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains can help reduce risk of chronic diseases, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Most fruits and vegetables are naturally low in fat, sodium, and calories, and are great sources of many nutrients, including potassium, dietary fiber, folate, vitamin A, vitamin E, and vitamin C.

Whole grains provide much more nutrients than their refined counterparts that are missing their outer layers—the germ and bran. The germ and bran of whole grains are rich in B vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. Most importantly, fruits, vegetables and whole grains taste great!
