Title IX Athletic Program Implementation Plan

Background

Mercer Island School District conducted a self-evaluation in Fall 2007 - Spring 2008 of its recreational and athletic programs to determine compliance with the equal educational opportunities requirements of state and federal law, chapters 28A.640 RCW and chapter 392-190 WAC, and Title IX of the Education Act Amendments of 1972, and 34 CRF Part 106.

The Mercer Island School District selected Education Equity Group to assist in reviewing its current programs, establishing a format for further self-evaluations, and identifying and making recommendations, regarding issues requiring corrective actions, if necessary.

The Board of Directors received the final report on the Title IX Athletic Program Compliance Review at the March 13, 2008 Board Meeting.  Click here for a copy of the final report.

Title IX Compliance Committee

The Title IX Compliance Committee met on April 11, May 2, May 29 and August 26, 2008 to provide input and guidance on Title IX compliance.  The report will represent recommendations from the committee and steps taken to address compliance concerns over the next two years (2008-2009 and 2009-2010).  The recommendation will be presented to the School Board at the September 25, 2008 regular board meeting.

Title IX Compliance Update – May 2, 2011

The Title IX Committee met on February 28 and March 28, 2011 to review the progress made in addressing compliance concerns addressed in the 2008 Compliance Report. The committee has found substantial improvement in the number of girls participating in sports within Mercer Island School District. For the 2010-11 school year, 61.6% of male students and 58.31% of female students participated in the sports program. The committee will meet on May 23, 2011 to establish new recommendation to ensure that the district maintains the momentum gained in addressing the issue of equity across the district.

On March 10, 2011, the Director of Athletics provided the board with an update on Title IX compliance. Click here for a copy of the Power Point presentation.

Mercer Island School District is committed to provided equitable programs for our male and female student across the district. We understand the value of our sports program in the development of our students to be the future leaders of American values and interests around the world.
