Mercer Island High School’s radio station KIMH-FM provided continuous coverage during last week’s winter storm

Students and volunteer staff members of Mercer Island High School’s own KIMH “Hot Jamz” Radio did an outstanding job of making sure the station stayed on the air to provide continuous weather updates during last week’s storm.

On Tuesday, January 17 students produced various weather related announcements for broadcast and continuously updated the HotJamz Facebook page to reflect school closures and delays. Additionally, KMIH staff volunteers prepared announcements for the city of Mercer Island concerning power outages and street closures.

The real-time storm coverage exemplifies the type of real world learning experiences MIHS radio and video teacher Charlie Hilen hopes to provide to students. “As a small community, we are in a unique position to have a local radio station at our disposal. Few communities are equipped with resources to both distribute public safety information and to provide students with first hand learning opportunities,” said Hilen.

In addition to their regular programming, KMIH-FM is committed to acting as a primary player in relaying emergency information.

Listen to live broadcasts of MIHS sports, community announcements, great music and more on Hot Jamz Radio KMIH-FM, 88.9 FM – 94.5 FM.
